A celebration of cultures, from Guatemala to Austria
This Lotería Austriaca is inspired by the beloved lotería game that many of us grew up playing in Guatemala. It’s a fun and vibrant tradition often shared during birthdays, holidays, or family gatherings. While lotería originated in Mexico, it holds a special place in Guatemala as a joyful way to bring people together. We’ve designed this game to honor both our Guatemalan roots and the rich culture of Austria, that we now call home. Each image in this lotería celebrates something uniquely Austrian—whether it’s iconic landmarks, traditional foods, or everyday moments that capture the spirit of this country.
1. Setup
Each player receives a board (Tablero) with 16 images. The caller (Cantor) shuffles the deck of 54 cards, each depicting one of the designs.
2. Gameplay
The caller draws one card at a time and announces the image aloud (feel free to add fun phrases or riddles for each
card!). Players mark the corresponding
image on their board using a token (like beans, coins, or small objects).
3. Winning Patterns
The first player to complete one of the following patterns yells “¡Lotería!” to win:
- Full Board (Tablero Completo): Mark all 16 images on your board.
- Straight Line (Línea Recta): Complete one horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line.
- The X (La X): Mark two diagonal lines that cross the board.
- Corners (Las Esquinas): Mark only the four corners of the board.
4. Verification
The caller checks the winning board against the drawn cards to confirm the win.
5. Optional
Keep playing for additional winners with different patterns or play multiple rounds!
